Women of Lawrence Hill Project Findings Workshop – 25th October

Bristol Women’s Voice delivered a workshop revealing some barriers women face and overcome to access work in Bristol, found in our Women of Lawrence Hill research project. WoLH Project Manager Debra Newrick delivered an overview of the initial findings of the research in Lawrence Hill, which found women faced transport difficulties when considering how to get to Temple Meads and that poverty, education, training and childcare are also challenges for women of Lawrence Hill. The full report will be available on our website in December.

Dr Mary Ann Stephenson from Women’s Budget Group gave an overview of national statistics on Austerity, and further highlighted that most barriers with regards to employment are faced by women.

We heard from our community researcher, Tara, on her experience as a researcher in this project and which aspects of the interviews challenged her the most, she expressed it was emotionally challenging to listen to the vast range of barriers faced by women, and mothers, like herself. Liz, our film-maker, also spoke about her role in this project as a woman and showed us an excellent and touching teaser of the film she has produced for this project.

Round table discussions considered the role of partnerships to support the women of Lawrence Hill achieve their goals and what we need to do to ensure women are included in the new TQEZ. Thank you to our project manager Debra Newrick, our researchers, our film-maker, Volunteer co-ordinator Sandra and the team of volunteers for all your hard work. We will be holding an end of project showcase on 30th November (10.30-2pm, at Barton Hill Settlement) showing a film put together by filmmaker Elizabeth Raynor and the full research findings.
