Talking to the Media

Role of the Media
The local media is an effective way to get your voice heard and draw the attention of people in your area.
- You can directly reach out to a local journalist who may be interested in what you are advocating for/ what issue you are concerned about.
- Send a short press release to a journalist.
- Some media accept article pitches from the public. If you wish to share your perspective on an issue, you may email the editors or sub-editors to consider your story.
- Many journalists and media people are on social media, such as Twitter and LinkedIn. Send them a quick message to ask if they can come to an event, attend a march, or a petition hand-in.
- You may be invited to an interview to discuss your concerns further. You aren’t obliged to participate, but if you do, remember to be short, concise and clear.
- You can contact local radio stations who may run programs that align with your concerns. Phone them up or email them to ask if they can cover your story.
Know your Media
If you think there is a story for someone to investigate, you can raise awareness of this via the local media, and they are likely to want to know why you think it is of interest to the general public. They will then seek both sides of the story and may even ask to interview you. Local news outlets also have opinion sections, and it may be that you can write a piece for them to share your views.
