IWD2026: Event Recap: Tackling Misogyny – Holistic Approaches to Smashing the Patriarchy
By Huan Huang, Volunteer
On Saturday 7 March, Bristol Women’s Voice hosted a panel discussion bringing together diverse voices to explore how we can effectively challenge misogyny and dismantle patriarchal structures. Chair Katy Taylor opened by framing the conversation: patriarchy as the system of male power, sexism as its supporting ideology, and misogyny as the “policing mechanism” that punishes those who defy gendered expectations.
Panellists shared stark insights across sectors. Clare Moody, Avon & Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner, highlighted the need for diverse leadership and robust regulation of online platforms driving harmful algorithms. Oliver Biggs from Men Acknowledging Patriarchy stressed that engaging men need to recognise how rigid gender roles harm everyone, urging shame-free conversations that invite accountability rather than defensiveness.
Alex Wood, Sexual Violence Advisor at Safe Link Plus, warned that rising referrals for peer-to-peer abuse and inadequate funding mean services are firefighting rather than preventing harm. Young activist Anne from Integrate UK pointed to gaps in school curricula and the influence of figures like Andrew Tate, asking: where are the positive male role models for today’s youth?
Cultural producer Glow Marie called for centring marginalised voices, particularly Black and indigenous feminist thought, to imagine alternatives beyond simply “smashing” the old. Cllr Stephen Williams emphasised practical actions—chairing meetings inclusively, mentoring women into politics—while Glow from the nightlife sector urged industries to examine behind-the-scenes power structures, not just who is on stage.
The discussion concluded that dismantling patriarchy requires both systemic change and individual responsibility. As panellists agreed, we must not only critique what exists but actively build something new together.
