Women over 55 describe feeling dismissed, unheard and worn down by the healthcare system.
A look back at some of the key findings over the last 12 months, as Bristol Women Voice (BWV) and Bristol Older People’s Forum (BOPF) tackle the health discrimination in the over 55s.
As part of their two-year partnership project, BWV and BOPF have been meeting on a monthly basis with a steering group, to discuss the issues. Together, they have found some of the key themes women over 55 are experiencing with medical professionals.
Whilst it is known there is deep-rooted medical misogyny- casual ageism and sexism, are often presented as the norm. Some women found it hard to define the precise language being used by medical professionals, but had a strong sense the tone and treatment was wrong. They often felt patronised and not believed by the doctors.
Others had more explicit experiences, describing comments framed around “their age”, resistance when requesting female practitioners, or repeated dismissal of their symptoms.
In both scenarios, the impact the women felt during their appointments was heightened by a sense of vulnerability. Although some felt able to challenge doctors during their appointment, others reported feeling “too ill” to stand up for themselves or “too worn out by the system.”
As BWV and BOPF approach the second year of their project together, they are looking to support women and influence health professionals so that women over 55 have better health outcomes.

Going into Year 2, they are seeking to hear from more voices of women over 55 about their experiences and to better understand their needs. The second year will also focus on amplifying underrepresented voices, including women from minority ethnic backgrounds, neurodivergent women, carers, and those living alone. It will also aim to empower women so they feel more able to prepare for medical appointments.
BWV and BOPF will continue working to influence and improve practice, and to promote more inclusive approaches to care for older women, helping to address the root causes of the problem.
